ScoutsVenture ScoutsSummer Camp in Larch Hill, July 2018

20th August 2018

The 5th Cork (The Lough) Scout Group headed off on their 14th camp since reopening in 2004. With 12 scouts, 5 ventures and 4 leaders the gang had a brilliant week in our National Headquarters Larch Hill.
It was a first for the troop as the section had gone mixed in the past year and so this was the first summer camp with female scouts in attendance and what a great addition they were.

The week was jam-packed with activities with a trip to the National Aquatic Centre and the Kildare Maze & Crazy Golf kicking off the week. On Tuesday, the group did the on-site activities at Larch Hill such as high ropes course, crate stacking, and grass sleds. Lots of fun was had by all! Wednesday was a trip into Dublin city to visit Dail Eireann hosted by our very own leader and TD Donnchadh O’Laoghaire followed with a tour of St Michins church to see the mummies and tombs. With tired feet, the scouts returned to the site and after dinner organised an international game of rounders with the UK scouts from Cheshire who were also on site. Great fun and lots of new friends were made too!
Thursday was all about survival, team challenges such as Patrick’s Maze and building the best bivouac using whatever material was available. The scouts built some very interesting structures and had lots of fun learning about survival including backwoods cooking making burritos. Friday was a visit to the very beautiful Bray to visit our friends in Crosscare Youth Group. Pier jumping was the first activity of the day with lots of impressive jumps, flips, dives, and belly flops! Next up was a skipping competition on the promenade which some of the locals even joined in the fun! After a tasty BBQ, it was free time at the Funfair before heading back to the site for our traditional final meal of camp; gammon steaks & pineapple with mash and beans!

The final campfire of the week was Friday night led by Michael Phillips who fondly remembered our dear friend Colin J Heas and all our friends who have passed away over the years. Saturday morning was by far the worst weather of the week and so camp was broken in heavy rain but spirits were high!
A special note of congratulations to Pamela Lombardi and Patrick Harrison on their very first scoutcamp with 5th Cork. Here’s to many more!
